I love asking people what birds they would like to see on a trip during the planning stage so I can make sure that we are visiting places that are likely to provide opportunities for the most desirable birds. When I ask first-time visitors to Costa Rica toucans are almost always one of the first birds mentioned so I took it to be a good omen when we found a group of a dozen or so Yellow-throated Toucans on the side of the road on the way from the airport to our first lodge. It was rather amusing watching everyone getting their gear out in a big hurry (or was that just me) to photograph these beauties.
