It’s not unusual to spot a Common Nighthawk sitting on top of a fence post during the summer months along the upper Texas coast and for that reason I have built up an impressive library of photos of them. I always have to chuckle at myself for taking more of what is essentially the same photo I already have so many of but it never stops me from clicking off a few more. I don’t know if it is those big eyes or that tiny beak, or maybe those stumpy legs, but I just find nightjars to be fascinating to look at. In this case I had passed up two sleeping nighthawks and resisted lifting my camera but when I saw this one perked up with its eyes wide open, I just couldn’t resist. As is usually the case, this bird patiently sat and posed while I moved my car into position to get a nice green background. Some things just never get old.
