This Northern Pygmy Owl isn’t a bird I expect to see on every trip to Arizona but this individual seemed to want to be found. While we were walking to the car to go to lunch this tiny owl flew right in front of me and landed in a nearby tree, chased by many small birds. The Dark-eyed Juncos were ticking away and we quickly went for our cameras. Before we could get a photo the owl was harassed into a more concealed location. We spent the next several minutes searching for him until he eventually flew out onto a fairly well exposed branch in the top of a nearby tree. Thankfully we were ready and got a few shots before it was chased up the hill where we couldn’t follow.
