The Ringed Kingfisher is always a key target birds when we do trips down to the Lower Rio Grande Valley and this past week’s trip had one with a twist. We saw this one fly up river and were waiting around in hopes that it would return to give us another photo opportunity. It took a while but our patience paid off. When the bird returned it flew by close carrying a young soft-shelled turtle in its beak. Definitely a first for me.
