Monasa nigrifrons
During our first encounter with the Hyacinth Macaws in the Pantanal we were faced with the challenge of photographing such a large bird (and these things are quite impressive in person) through the trees. It seemed like there was no angle that let us get a good side view of the bird but eventually we found just the right shooting location. What we didn’t notice right away was that there were rotting palm dates all over the ground where we were staying. Our first surprise was that there were tons of ants eating the rotting fruit and before long, eating our legs. Once I got away from the ants I got my second surprise, this Black-fronted Nunbird just a few feet from my head. It was a cool customer and let me back up far enough to get a photo.
