Tympanuchus phasianellus
This morning we had a lot of fun watching the antics of the Sharp-tailed Grouse on their lek. There was a little cloud cover making photography a little more challenging than the other mornings on the trip so far. It also didn’t help that a Northern Harrier kept buzzing the lek but I think everyone got nice photos anyhow. An added treat was a hybrid Greater Prairie Chicken – Sharp-tailed Grouse that looked like a Greater Prairie Chicken with purple air sacs and very short pinnae and a display that was a cross between the two species. The poor guy wasn’t getting any attention at all. Here is a typical Sharp-tailed Grouse.
