Cochlearius cochlearius
The Boat-billed Heron is one of the birds at the top of my want list the first time I went to Costa Rica and having seen a number of nice photos of them I thought it would be an easy bird. Little did I know that they are crepuscular, meaning that they are active around dawn and dusk. The result was that whenever I encountered them during the day they were roosting in dense vegetation and it was very difficult to get any open shots of them. After that experience I really appreciate any time when I can get a photo of the whole bird and as luck would have it we got just such a chance this past October in Costa Rica.
