Busarellus nigricollis
The first time I ever saw a Black-collared Hawk was in Venezuela and I have to say that it was a very exciting experience. I think that might be part of the reason I have always loved this species, though it doesn’t hurt that it is a pretty cool looking bird. This photo was from our October trip to Costa Rica and as you can see here the hawk didn’t disappoint. Conditions were a bit challenging with the gray sky and threat of rain at any moment so I didn’t really expect to get any in flight shots. I was very pleasantly surprised to see that this shot and a few others actually came out despite slower shutter speeds than I would have liked. Without warning the bird took off from the trees and flew right over our heads.
