Anhinga anhinga
We get Anhingas here in Texas but this particular one was photographed in a wetland in Costa Rica this past October. This individual is drying its wings after a session of swimming around underwater spearing fish with its sharp beak. This is drying is important since the Anhinga’s feathers are wetted much more easily than those of other aquatic birds like ducks. The brown head and breast tell us that this bird is a female. I find it difficult to pass up an Anhinga drying its wings like this; I find the shape very appealing.
