Melanerpes hoffmannii

If you are a Texas birder you might guess that this bird is a Golden-fronted Woodpecker but actually this one is a Hoffmann’s Woodpecker from Costa Rica. Obviously the two species share a common ancestor. This bird was photographed just outside of Tenorio National Park foraging in an area that was regenerating after having been cleared in the not to distant past.
