Leucopternis semiplumbeus
One of the biggest highlights of the first day of our October Costa Rica trip was this Semiplumbeous Hawk. We were crossing a hanging bridge that allowed us to have an eye-level view of the canopy when a Slaty-tailed Trogon flew into a nearby tree. The bridge was shaky so getting photos of the trogon was challenging but I think everyone managed at least a couple of shots. As we were moving off the bride Sandy called us back and was very excited to point out this beautiful hawk that had landed in the tree right next to her. The bird patiently waited while we shuffled back onto the bridge and took photos. It was only the second time I have seen one of these beautiful raptors and the first time I got to see one at eye-level.
