Eastern Screech-Owl

Megascops asio

I met a friend tonight out in west Houston to look for screech owls. It took a little searching but we eventually heard one calling and after a lot more searching we got to a position where it sounded like the owl was fairly near by. It wasn’t until we used our flash light to try to actually see him that we discovered that not only was he close, he was almost close enough for us to pet him. We backed up as far as we could and thankfully he stayed put and we were able to get some crazy close shots. Most of my images were so close that part of the bird was clipped off but a few contain the entire bird. I find it amazing that this little bird would tolerate our presence as well as it did and that it could be so close to us without being detected.
