Litter Jeep

Our trusty steed outside the Battalion Aid Station in Lai Khe basecamp. Besides general transportation around basecamp, we used it to transport wounded soldiers from within and around the basecamp. Prior to the start of the Tet Offensive there were increased attacks. Our Brigade Officers' Club was blown up by sappers on 15 Jan '68, with the loss of 9 officers killed and another 18 wounded, and there were numerous attacks on the perimeter. The attackers seemed to have come from Lai Khe village, which was inside the basecamp, surrounded by useless concertina wire. Once the Tet Offensive started there were heavy casualties in the basecamp from rocket attacks and some wounded on perimeter, attacked from inside the basecamp.

The company area for 701st Maintenance was directly across the street from the 2/28th Inf. Battalion Aid Station. We were both between Division HQ the Lai Khe airstrip. A lot of rockets came down within that corridor.
