Lt. Joe Devine and team

Lt. Joe Devine, to the far right, was with Delta Company as line platoon leader, mortar platoon leader and later XO. He was an excellent officer who was, and still is, highly respected by those who served with him. According to Dale Courtney, his RTO, "Joe was a great soldier and I am proud to have had the opportunity to serve with him. He knew his stuff and he taught me a lot to help me keep myself alive as well as others."

Joe, who passed away last year, went back to Vietnam for a second tour as an advisor. Also in the photo are:

Dale Courtney, Lt. Devine's RTO (radio operator). The relationship between officers and their RTOs was special. Any time they were in the field and on the move they were seldom more than a few feet from each other because the communications link was crucial. That radio also identified the RTO as a prime target for VC gunners. During the Battle of Ong Thanh nearly every RTO in the Black Lion force was killed or seriously wounded. According to former Delta Company commander Jerry Grosso, Dale was an outstanding soldier who became the platoon sergeant and also filled in as platoon leader as needed.

Tom McLellan, another proud Delta Warrior, identified himself in the far left of the photo (see comments below).

Paul Marshall, platoon sergeant, is behind Dale. Paul also passed away last year.

I don't know who to credit for this photo, since it was one that was shared with a large group of people. Obviously, I didn't take it, since I originally identified the officer as CPT Gerry Grosso (see comments below). Although I didn't know them at the time, I am proud to have served with each and every one of them.

Totally unreal. I became Dale's 4-6 kilo eventually, for a while. Then moved to 6 kilo shorty after GG's sudden departure. A lot of good men in these photos. Love them all. Even today, they help me out hugely.

Another poignant photo, DAve ... and most poignant of all are the various comments under it. Those comments underscore the brotherhood that arises in these situations and that last a lifetime.

More comment by Dale Courtney re this photo with him in the foreground:
"..I don't have a clue (who took the photo) but it must have been taken up along the air strip or inside Delta's company area or Joe would not have had his towel cover over that M-16. He used to demand I take mine off when out in a NDP. Did ya notice how I was using my M-16 to help prop me up due to the heavy load we all carried? Off course a lot of my weight was probably extras for my own pleasures while being out. After adjusting to the environment I normally only carried two extra magazines full of ammo plus the one inserted in the M-16. Joe has two bandoleers hanging around his neck. If I had to of went through some of the shit he had to I would have probably had four or more on me!
Dale..."

To add on a bit, Dale Courtney, the RTO in the photo went on to become plt sgt of the mortar platoon and acting plt leader on a number of occasion. He lives in Montana now but is smart enough to take his RV down to Arizona in the winter! I'm trying to get him to stop smoking. If Tom McClellan says that is himself in the back, I believe him. Unlike most of us though, he's gotten a lot better looking than that kid in the photo!
Joe Devine went back to VN for a second tour but as an adviser with MACV; I believe he retired a LtCol. A number of his Delta comrades managed to make it to his burial in Arlington.

Hi Guys. I believe the guy on the far left is me, Tom McLellan. I must have been a gunner in the Mortar platoon at this time as I was carrying a 45. Nice picture of Joe and Dale.
