"War Wagon"

This was an armored truck used for transporting troops between basecamps. Painted on the side was the name "War Wagon", which was the name of a popular western movie in 1967. When I got orders for the 1st Infantry Division, after a couple of days at Bien Hoa, this truck transported myself and a number of other soldiers with the same orders from Bien Hoa to 1st Infantry Division HQ at Di An.

The ride was an eye-opener for a Northern California kid who had never seen real poverty, and definitely not the damages caused by the war, right along what, even though it was a two lane dirt road, was considered a highway. That was Highway 13, the famous "Thunder Road" (another movie name). It got that name because of the number of vehicles that were blown up by mines while traveling it. Along the way, we saw airstrikes going on in the near distance, many destroyed buildings and, only a few days into our tour, our first dead bodies. They were laid out beside the road, with no indication as to what had happened to them. Welcome to the 'Nam!
