The Battle of Ong Thanh - 17 Oct. '67 - The human cost

Panel 28E - the price of war.

On 17 October 1967, elements of the 2/28th Infantry found the basecamp of the 271st Main Force VC Regiment, which we had been pursuing and skirmishing with for the previous 8 days. The Black Lion force was caught in a bloody ambush in which at least 60 American soldiers were killed or missing and presumed dead, and at least 75 others wounded (typical of the Vietnam War, the numbers vary slightly, depending on what account you read). Four of those killed were fellow Black Lion medics. Military strategists use the term "acceptable loss", which is the approximate number of casualties that are acceptable in order to achieve an objective. No objective was gained that day, and to a combat medic no loss is acceptable. Loss on this scale is devastating.

". . . They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them."*

* "For the Fallen", by Laurence Binyon

The 2/2 inf was in Dian at the time, we were called to mount up and get the guys out the bars in town early in the day as we road through the MP's were clearing them out to jump on the tracks, we headed up as fast as we could and ended up not to far from the battle zone when we could not go ant farther , our crew sat and listened to one of the officers talk on the radio, then the radio man was killed and then he was wounded and then silence, this was a very sad sobering day... God Bless them that survied

... just returned from a weekend funeral at Arlington National Cemetary for my old Battalion Commander ... the Old Guard does a fantastic and touching job at these funerals. We (and they) stood in 6" of snow, wind chill was 5 degrees and the wind was gusting at about 30 mph ... yet the troops were there (a platoon), as well as the burial detail, a firing squad and the bugler. If people have never been to Arlington National Cemetary, they should make a point of it.
