2/2nd Infantry (Mechanized) area - Lai Khe basecamp

A great deal of the Lai Khe basecamp was built in an unused part of the Michelin Rubber Plantation. Many of the old French buildings were used by the Army. The shade of the rubber trees was nice to have on hot days (just about the only kind we had, but when incoming rockets hit, as hundreds did during the Tet Offensive in '68, the trees presented more of a hazard. You could be killed by a rocket that hit a tree a hundred yards away.

I remember traveling to Xuan Loc one sunny afternoon and driving thru a portion of the Michelin when, all of a sudden, there was an airstrike about a mile away and a group of ACs all buttoned up followed on. Needless to say, I floored my jeep and got out of there.
