A young 7th Div. GI, probably late getting back from lunch, turned in front of a truck at the side gate just as I got there. I heard a loud noise and then saw the motorcycle bounce out from under the truck as it passed the gate, brakes locked and tires screeching. The soldier was still under the truck when I got to him. Other people stopped to help.
I have no idea who put me in for this award. It was obviously someone from 7th Infantry Division, since it was signed off by MG Ayers, the Commanding General. My best guess is that it was one of the bystanders who, after the soldier was transported to the hospital, took the time and effort to find out who I was and to write the award recommendation.
