An afternoon in the company of those who served . . .

Walking through the cemetery on the grounds of the California Veterans Home in Yountville was a fascinating glimpse into history. Markers memorialize veterans from the Civil War and Indian Wars through WWII, Korea and Vietnam. The Veterans Home was founded in 1884. It's a peaceful but hardscrabble place, not Arlington. Most of the veterans interred here aren't famous and their accomplishments are unknown, but they served their country faithfully. It's a shame that the State of California hasn't maintained the grounds as they should, but the company is exceptional.
