This is where I live. I designed and built this home in 2002.
I live in rural North Carolina just North of the state capitol, Raleigh.
I've always wanted to live in the country, but none of my wives did.
I didn't have a lawn the first years, just Black Eye Susans.
Being single has certain advantages.
Today I have a riding mower and my father's yard "If it's green, it's grass".
The house is of the Rural Industrial style and designed to look like an old railroad station.
This only seemed natural because it's a mere 80 feet from the CSX freight line.
I'm the semi-official town eccentric.
We only get one or two trains a day and hardly ever any at night.
There is also a siding that goes to the lumber mill.
Sometimes they fill hopper cars with fresh wood chips and the air smells like pine for days.
Youngsville is too small for home mail delivery and we all have to pick up our mail at the Post Office.
I'm sure most people would find that terribly inconvenient, but I find it charming.
We meet our neighbors and talk.
The Post Office has Customer Appreciation Day in the summer.
They serve cookies and soft drinks.
People bring their dogs to the Post Office... and no one thinks anything of it.
