From a distance this fruit looked like a small green apple, however after a closer look it is shaped more like a kiwi or a lime and is covered with white dots and short, light coloured hairs. The tree is quite old, about 6 meters (20 ft) tall, fairly heavy with fruit and is situated along the edge of the Nanaimo River. After some research it seems that there are kiwi trees as well as lime trees and either could grow in the temperate costal climate. We'll watch closely as the fruit rippens and hopefully the mystery will resolve itself.
SOLUTION: This is definitely not an apple, nor a kiwi, lime, or vegetable. After more research, another visit to the tree, some creative brainstorming and the following Google inquiry: "nut tree unripe nuts green with spots on them" the answer was.....a WALNUT!
Scientifically speaking fruits grow from the flowers of plants and have seeds for reproduction, vegetables are all other parts of the plant, including the roots, stems, and leaves.
Botanically, most nuts are the seeds of a fruit, peanuts are the exception, as they’re legumes — and thus technically vegetables.
