Just playing: selected out the two mushroomms, inverted the selection and deleted/cleared the non-mushroom surrounds from the layer, then played with whites, blacks, shadow, contrast on this front, top layer ... the lighter layer behind is just a partially visible, larger copy of the top layer over a light coloured background (i.e. a white or light gray, bottom, base layer). Really very very simple.
