5th(tie) - The Loft
by Penny Street

NYC

With the use of the flash I was able to show both the store window and the reflections, where without it the reflections would have dominated.

Interesting and mind boggling Penny! It makes me want to examine it closely to try and figure everything out! :-) CJ

Good info Tom, thanks. I haven't looked into the reasons but when I took some flash picys at a wedding in AV mode they came out over exposed. I think wot happened is I was taking non flash picys set on F8 & the camera was setting the shutter speed. I put the flash on & I think the camera changed the shutter speed to 1/200s to sync the flash which then over exposed the scene which needed a higher shutter speed. It's not the cameras fault as I should have known the sync speeds & adjusted the F stop to expose properly , then I think the camera would have worked as you described. In manual I look at the meter in the viewfinder & adjust my F stops or shutter & can underexpose the picy to make the background darker & the flash then exposes the subject correctly. Mind you I'm really green at this so this is wot I think is happening:-)

thanks for the comments and for the info Tom!
What you are saying really makes sense with what I always thought were the differences between P and all the other settings. Flash or no flash.

This is very nice!! the combination of reflection and the reality is very interesting.
Creative use of flash indeed!

Rod & Penny Street,
Just last week I went to a workshop let by the regional Canon rep. He explained this very this about the flash;
P & A-DEP = Exposes primarily for flash (flash is the main light source)
M, Av, & Tv = Exposes as if flash is not on (flash combines with ambient light)
Hope that helps.
PS; mannequins & reflections, two of my faves. The colors & composition bring this shot to life.

For this I used P. But I will try it next time in manual.

Penny have you tried shooting flash in manual mode yet? It's easier than it sounds & the main benefit is the flash just acts as a fill flash. I think in AV & TV modes it acts as the main light source. I think it only acts as a fill in P mode also. This picy worked great, but try it for your next epic work:-)

The competition between the reflections & the store window is almost mind bending, wot a great idea. You might become the first girl to turn into an ahrtiiiiiiist:-) This looks great on my screen, terrific work Penny.
