No problem as for the focus. I like the shallow dof. Having focussed to the tip is the convincing explanation for the impression of front focus so I think nothing is wrong with your lense. I prefer this shallow dof to a tack-sharp background. -Gerald

No I just used the auto focus Tommy, You could be right about front focusing but I'm not sure where I focused on the lime. It's looking at us long side on so if I focused on the front tip the focus might be OK but if I focused towards the edge of the lime then the DOF is all out front a. I've been quite happy with the sharpness of the lenses & really didn't want to test them like they do on the lens forum & become really unhappy with their performance. Even not using F16 because of what I've read at the lens forum about diffraction but like you say having good DOF for these sort of picys is far more important than a little bit of diffraction which I doubt I could even see. It's funny I never had any no go zones on me lenses when shooting film so I really should treat everything the same as then & just be happy if I can't see anything wrong. Thanks mate:-)

Did you manually focus? It seems to be "front focusing", but I've become so distrustful of autofocus that I try to check the distance scale when possible. It seems to me that newer lenses without distance or dof scales make it more difficult to manually focus or to control dof. This shot was at f/8 which is not sufficient for maximum dof in closeups. I regularly shoot at f/16 or even f/22 when in doubt even with wide angle lenses. Some will say that diffraction at small apertures will degrade the image, but when confronted with dof problems, it is still better to use the smallest aperture possible. On the other hand, the dof here seems to work to set off the lime against the bg. All hail the mighty lime. -tv

Thanks girls:-) I think if I had a couple more weeks I might get this shot right:-)

much better! Penny Street

Yes, I think the increased DOF is an improvement. And I had noticed the very narrow line of sharp focus in the other version...same thing happens to me when I do closeups at wide aperture with my 50mm.

Just re-shot it with the 17-55 for more DOF I think it might work a bit better now.
Rod 04-May-2008 22:45
Thanks Mary Anne:-) I think it's the narrow DOF if you look at the bottom of the picy you can see a thin line of in focus. So I imagine only a small part of the lime is in the DOF, buggered if I know what part though:-) Maybe I should use higher shutter speeds too as I'm taking real liberties because the lens has IS. And don't mention using a tripod as I would have to carry it all the way to the back fence which is at least 8 meters away:-)

Is it just me, or is the lemon not quite in focus? I do like the pure yellow and blue here, Rod.

Thanks Suey, that's a flower pot in its base:-)

I like the yellow and what is the blue background?
Rod 04-May-2008 00:02
Thanks Penny:-) This camera has a mind of its own....It's like living wiv two Mereanas:-)

This definitely suits the challenge and it sounds like you're having fun with the new camera! I still like the colors.

Thanks Carole,Penny & Tommy:-) I re-shot this again & had to do it landscape to fit on Caroles monitor:-) The close up makes it easier to compose a bit better so maybe this one might work a bit better. The bleeding camera is showing the 2-5-08 again, I set it to the 3rd yesterday, maybe it's the silly 24hr clock thingy.

I haven't looked at the original but for me the visual interest is in the patterns of pot painting, the chipped paint, and dried leaves - all of which serve as the stage for the lemons. I know you don't like to crop, but pls take a look at the result without the top third of the pot. Great colors btw. -tv

I like the colors of the lemons and the bowl. and the leaves are a nice touch too, but........... oh, I don't know......... maybe less of the pot would be good (a crop from the top).

This has a more natural look to it although since I have to scroll around to see the whole image on my laptop, it ends up that a crop of the top and bottom looks a bit better to me. What do you think Rod? The twigs make nice leading lines...you're getting better at "arrangements"! :-D CJ

After me nap I went back & re shot this in a more girly way. The other more manly picy wiv tension, & some would say poor composition is stuck in Pending:-)
Rod 03-May-2008 03:27
But Carole think about manly & tension.....& I'm tired. I will look at this again after me nap:-)
ctfchallenge03-May-2008 02:36
Hmmmm - a set-up shot out in the yard Rod????? Nice color combination and I like the cracked pot and the natural elements, but I'm not sure about the composition. I'll have to think about it a while! :-) CJ
