The Calla Lillies are in Bloom

I just bought this new $50 Sima soft focus lens
yesterday. I immediately went to the local nursery.
It's somewhat difficult to get used to focusing it,
but just look at what it can produce! A minor crop
and a bit of burning to bring down a light area in
the green, and my usual burning in of the edges was
all it took!

This is beautiful, Lonnit. I don't think I'd use a lens like this much, but you've chosen the perfect subject. It really enhances it. ~Lydia

Lonnit, I am just cracking-up over you "It's a plastic piece of crap" comment. If ever I need an honest review, I now know where to go. Thanks again for the picy & the belly-laugh.

It is a lens in itself. It had no mount. I had to purchase one. It looks like a black plastic toilet paper tube, with another tube within it that slides in and out. I just found a pic of it here:http://www.pbase.com/dang/image/72842789 ~ Lonnit

Does it go over a lens on your camera or does it have a Canon mount. Can you post a picy of it please.
ctfchallenge24-Mar-2008 04:20
It's a plastic piece of crap, about 6" long with a cheesy, cheapo hunk of glass at one end. It telescopes in and out to focus. Focus? Can you call it that? LOL! Ok, it slides in and out to make it the least out of focus you can. The glow is simply from the soft focus. The purple is just the pink, out of focus, blending into the green behind. ~ Lonnit

This is rather kewl Lonnit - Is the glow natural or how did the light play? It really has a glow about it. What makes the purple edge? and where do you buy these lenses? :) jano

I'm sure this lens will have its uses, as wiv all dominant effects use them sparingly. Well later anyway as we need to have a good play wiv new gear a. Isit like cardboard tubes or does it look like a proper lens?

The benefit of the lens is no cleanup. I had a discussion about that at camera club when the guy offered these lenses. Someone said Dippity-Doo is better because it's water soluble. I was thinking aloe vera gel would be good too. Still though, I don't want the mess in my bag or on my hands when I'm handling the camera. This is more consistent as well. ~ Lonnit

That's good then Tom I can now say this stinks:-)

Lonnit, this is absolutely lovely. Also, sorry guys, unless this is a new hybrid, the calla lily doesn't really have much aroma.

In the old days we would use some $0.79 Vaseline for this kind of effect. Don't know what Sima is but it sounds like something gooey. Anyway the colors work well and the glow seems ethereal. -tv

Haven't tried a portrait yet. The stupid $50 lens needed a $32 canon mount! LOL! I then went directly to the nursery to shoot.

Yes, stupid back button! I cleaned out the dupes.

It would photography nicely with a normal lens, but since when do I do anything normal! LOL! I like the glow.

Thanks all! ~ Lonnit

I agree wiv Mikey this does look like it would smell good a. It would also photograph really well wivout using the Sima junk:-)
