That's a fascinating article. (If you're having trouble getting the link to work, just copy the link and take out the last period.) At over a million dollars for the mock-up of the building to see if the lighting worked the way they planned plus a $250K grant, I hope they shared their newly found knowledge with the industry to benefit us all. It's a fascinating concept, to be sure. ~Lydia

Nicely captured pattern. And thank you for the interesting info on the building, never heard of this kind of lighting.

Thanks tv for your input. For anybody interested, I read further and found this link inserted in an article about the sustainable lighting being used on this building http://www.mechoshade.com/site/sustainable/ny_times_mockup/pdf/a_day_in_the_light.pdf. It's dated 2004, before they even began construction here in the city, but the pictures look identical to the finished product. I think the building is fascinating to look at because it's different from every angle (where you can see in - the way the light shines onto it and from within it). And it isn't an eyesore or even a spectacle or wonder or anything - it's just different than anything else I've seen. NY is not a particularly green city and I'm pleased (but not surprised) that the New York Times Building went first with this.

Interesting... I wonder how much light it shades from the building... and how much electricity they could have bought with the money they spent on the 'shade'. In any case, it does add beautiful interest to your excellent capture, Penny. ~Lydia

Very nicely done Penny and clever title.
Thanks Tommy too! I enjoyed hearing your details about the building.

For anyone who is curious (or not), this is a high tech building notable for the grate of white porcelain cylinders whose purpose is to capture and disburse external light into the interior, thereby saving lighting costs and energy. I learned from a recent article in.. where else.. The New York Times. -tv
