Chat Noir

This is an imitation of Lee's "Out the Window" http://www.pbase.com/ctfchallenge/image/35701861 which I just love.
I tried to imitate it once before with very bad results http://www.pbase.com/cslr_challenge/image/49512287
but I have kept trying and almost 2-1/2 years later I have finally managed a decent version of Lee's wonderful shot.

Canon EOS 350D ,Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS
1/320s f/5.6 at 85.0mm iso200 full exif

other sizes: small medium original auto

Thanks, Lydia, Kiki and Britt! Kiki, you make a good point about the Golden Mean. I did try Lonnit's suggestion and found that since the black edge at his neck was so much reduced it looked like he was about to fall into all of the white. Very much off balance. So I am staying with my original which is a different shape than Lee's image anyway. I do appreciate all of the input though. ~Sharon

Sharon - this is a great take on the original as a "black and white" version. Fabulous!

Now, Rod... you know I wouldn't do that! I was just trying to be sarcastic by stating the obvious (actually didn't realize it would put the thumbnail up there) as I degraded myself for trying to correct Sharon when she was making it the same as the original. I guess I'm not as good at sarcasm as some who are more practiced. Carry on. *grin* ~Lydia

To add my 5 cents to the confusion.. I like composition this better than the original. More headroom over the eye, it feels comfier. The black/white twist makes it something entirely different though, striking minimalism. Keep in mind that the rule of threes is just a simplified subset of the Golden Ratio (1.618), to make it easier to apply something in the vicinity of classic good design. Then look at where that eye sits...

That's my point, Lonnit. *grin* I'm so busy telling her to flip it and it looks just like the one she's imitating. *sigh* I was trying to say I didn't know what I was talking about. *smile* ~Lydia

That IS the one she was imitating. ~ Lonnit

Or just claim you were imitating this one: *grin* ~Lydia

Just flip it horizontally and then add a large white border to the right. :) I agree that it would be better flipped, but it's a really great image... the whiskers and the eye... and that little definition of the nose... ~lydia

Thanks, Lonnit! I see what you mean and, if I get time next week, I will try your suggestion. ~Sharon

Nice job. I would prefer the face to be on the right line of thirds, as opposed to the left, b/c we read from left to right. Once we get to the face, we continue on and get stuck in the blackness. Having 2/3 white and then stopping upon the black face would keep us looking where we should be looking. Let's take a look at the original... Oh, ok, confirmation! LOL! ;) Look at how Lee composed it; the nose is on the left line of thirds, to lead us in, and the eye is on the right line of thirds. Fortunately, if you want to add space to the left side here, it's the easiest background in the world! LOL! Very nice shot though. :) ~ Lonnit
