I grew up in Ashtabula in the 80's/90's and always wanted a Banzer.

Also hello Tina

I am Don Banzer's youngest daughter. This is a beatiful instrument, and thanks for posting it. He was a true artist and great friend to many. The date of his passing is incorrect. My father passed away the morning of May 13th, 1995. He was my best friend, and I will miss and love him forever.

Beautiful picture and instrument. I think your dates about Don are incorrect - he delivered my guitar, no. 219 of the 220 he built, in February, 1994. He was a wonderful and courageous man whose guitars are played by professionals such as Jorge Morel.

What a beautiful guitar and what a nice story! I bet you will treasure this for many years to come. :-) CJ

What wood! Sometimes an instrument conveys an impression of its sound by its appearance not always realized. My mother-in-law's cello is ugly and worn but has an incredibly full and even sound. -tv

Your guitar is just beautiful.

I updated with this image which is not quite as intimate but really exposes the quilt. A bedside lamp is not the best lighting equipment. Also for some reason the exif doesn't update this data is 1/1.7, f/3.2, 12.73mm, iso 200 John

I think our sofas came from the leather store but I am not sure about the chair. It has been a while and you have to play every day to keep up classical guitar. Other interests like our kids soccer, drives in the roadster, and renewed interest in photography supplant most of the time. John

Don Banzer, Ashtabula, Ohio, made this classical guitar for me just before he died in Nov 1992. He got it finished and delivered on my birthday and died of cancer 3 months later. I spend many an hour with him on the phone both during and after the making of this great guitar. The wood choices are all mine but the craftsmanship and sweet sound are all his.

The black is Indian Rosewood as is the fretboard and ornate head. The sound board (front) is Engleman Spruce (a Colorado Spruce that is no longer available) that produces a clearer high than most nylon string guitars. The sides and back are quilted maple that produces deep resonance but more importantly is beautiful to look at. The wavy grain creates a shadow effect that appears to look like the puffs of a quilt which give it its name (see bottom left).

The leather arm chair is only about 5 years old but is a favorite in my house. To Don Banzer, a great friend who I met in person only once but who's memory lives on in the great instruments he produced. Thanks Don.
John

Oh. We posted at the same time. I'm sorry to hear of the loss of your friend, but glad that you have this to frequently enjoy his talent and remember him by. ~Lydia

John, that's beautiful. I think I used to have a sofa just EXACTLY like that. The Leather Store? That thing wore like iron! :) Do you play the guitar? ~Lydia
