Thanks Techo. I like your critique.

The trees rising from the water makes this surreal! A special landscape capture. I just keep staring at this one. These kind of moments don't last long. I've seen so many sunsets where a body of water comes into play, and this moment might have only last 5minutes or less. Looking at the ripples in the water the exposure I reckon would've been faster than 2sec. The only effect I see as a result of using an ND filter, is the darkened top corners, which I happen to like here. The colors are totally believable to me here.

Thanks Andy it's a deal I'd luv to see the after glow:-). Holly is a graphic designer, so she is a layman:-)hehe

I like your daughter, Rob, she has good taste or maybe just a layman :) :)

Always good to have a healthy discussion about these things......a good way to learn - as long as it does not get personal.

If you ever get down SA way and we are lucky we get some very good beach and sunset shots with lots of "after glow".

Cheers
Andy S :)

Andy there's no need for you to apologise as your words were no stronger or even less than mine & my words came first so I apologise for being overly critical. I do get overly critical when I get on my soapbox when I think Photoshop has created more than the camera (I should learn to tone this down). I have no problems with the colours here as being in Oz we get some fantastic colours in sunsets. My only problem was just seeing so much light on the water & right side of the sky when the sun has gone down past the horizon. I understand what Kiki is saying but I've never seen sunlight reflected onto water after sunset that is visible to the human eye but is visible to the camera with enough exposure time as when we take long exposures just using star light. The only end result that matters is that you like this shot Andy, the importance of what I like only matters to my own shots but it's nice to have more of an in depth chat here sometimes even if some sparks are generated. My daughter walked in as I was typing this & said gee thats a lovely shot........I told her to bugger off:-)
Sorry about the fuss Andy.

K2, thanks for the comment and brief explanation of how the light might work.

Rod, I agree and apologize for my strong words - "ignorance" was a little over the top. The colours are not however created by the ND filter - they are quite visible to the naked eye I have seen these colours many times at sunset and for a few minutes afterwards. I am not sure of the physics or how it occurs but many time the colour seems not to be were one might expect it to be, often reflected in distant clouds etc. I guess that is why they call it "magic"?

Each to their own taste; I appreciate yours and your comments.

Cheers - Andy S :)

Nice picture, not "too nice" IMO, allthough I don't have any objections to nice The trees are a good contrast anyway. Allow me to chime in on the light situation: Even if the sun has just gone down, sunlight can still hit clouds or haze above, which in turn would reflect light down into the water again. I didn't notice a grad filter had been used before you wrote it really. But then I saw it: It must have been slightly diagonal? :) Makes the light and hue interesting on the right side of the trees.

Ah a ND graduated filter explains how you got light on the water after the sun had gone down. I don't know if ignorence is the right word to use when being presented with a shot that has no resemblance to what the human eye can see & with no camera settings posted to give a clue as to a long shutter speed used which might indicate what may have took place when this was taken. I thought I was just a pretty postcard type photographer but this sort of shot is way to pretty & false for me mate.

It's beautiful and I'll bet it will get one of my votes. shu

Thanks for the complimentary comments from most of you.

Rod, your cynicism and ignorance is showing to the extreme. No painting in Photoshop or any other image manipulation. A crop that I thought was appropriate and sharpening as I always do. The image you see is real. One of 18 images I took that evening.I used an ND graduated filter to even the exposure on the sky and water. I got two from 18 with this colour and others with a range of hues as the sun went down and a little after the sun went down.

You know some times mother nature gives us some wonderful moments (almost perfect). This is one of them for me. In the right place at the right time, as thy say. You have to learn to be less cynical and just enjoy peoples images as presented to you.

Cheers

Sounds silly but it looks too perfect to me like those paintings on black velvet sold in the mall. It seems to lack substance & reality. Is this an HDR type shot Andy? The bright light on the water after the sun has gone down makes it more a computer graphic to me but it will impress the laymen:-)

beautifully composed, simple, serene, and vibrant landscape. one of my favourites of the gallery so far. -Abstract

I really like the gradations of color in this one and those wonderful tree silhouettes make it unique. It is hard to take a sunset photo that is able to standout from the crowd. Nice one.

The trees and minimal horizon line set this apart from mose "sunsets". Very nice, and to me, memorable, which is what really counts. -tv
