This sign was on display at the National Railway Museum in York.

I concede that this shot does not really emphasize the area surrounding the sign. But it is entertaining to try to imagine where the sign might have been originally displayed, who its intended audience might have been, and what instructions its message was really intended to convey.

These signs were in a lot of Mens toilets to make sure their fly holes were done up. We had a lot of button only flys back then.

Since this sign was on display at the Railway Museum, I would guess that it had been intended as a reminder to railroad employees (Conductors, perhaps?) to make sure they were in the full and proper uniform, before allowing themselves to be seen by their customers. How has the language changed through the years! LOL

I remember seeing one of these in a men's restroom in an old theatre in London. It was on the back of the door as you left. It's in the Queen's English don't you know. TomD.

They used to have these in the men's loo, I don't know why as not many blokes wore dresses:-)

It certainly has your intended effect. Could be from a bathroom or maybe a brothal in olden days. I guess we could say it implies its environment. Thanks for the posting as an extension of the topic. -tv
