Thanks, Shu. It also reminded me of a watercolor painting, which is one of the reasons I like it. I've been taking watercolor lessons, and I can easily see this one made into a very "loose" painting.

It looks very much like a water color and IMO is very pleasing to the eye! shu

Rod, you're pretty good at trouble-making yourself...or at least at looking for a controversy. ;-)

It's on topic Mary Anne:-) I just luv Carole she's a little trouble maker:-)

CJ and Rod, I'm glad my maybe-on-topic got the two of you started on a little controversy. ;-) It says "distance" to me, so I guess I'll leave it here unless it's declared off-topic. Or unless I get lucky when I go out shooting this weekend.

Me again:-) Have a look at the clouds in Paul's shot they even say distance the way they recede away in the shot.

Just had a look at Lonnits Off season & it's totally different to this, her shot stops at the upper third & the bins get progressively smaller which are what I'm calling distance clues. DBs shot had a wide expanse of water then the blue ice & on to the snow capped mountain the distance clues were really obvious in that shot. Maybe the problem here is it was shot at close to 90mm (55mm APS) telephoto which doesn't help with distance effects.

From memory the shots you mention have layers that just don't stop suddenly like it does here at the sand dunes & Pauls shot has distance clues front & sides so the eye travels in the shot. more of an angle would have worked better for the topic on this & it would be up to the photographer to make it not boring. To have the eyes stop in the lower third doesn't lend itself to distance & nothing really takes my eye over the stairs..................Plus who said consistency was one of me traits:-)

That doesn't make sense Rod! You'd have to call every straight-on in-focus landscape shot in the challenge off-topic like Paul's "Trig", RK's "Summer of 2006", Lonnit's "Off Season" and db's "Patagonia2" and "La Pampa" in the Exhibition gallery alone. This does have layers, just a little closer than some of the other images - water, sand, person, rocks, sand dune, walkway with stairs and even smaller images of people, and sky and clouds. This might have said distance more if shot at an angle but it would be a boring gallery if every distance shot had converging or leading lines into the distance don't you think? ;-)

This might benefit by a little more contrast and USM to bring out the clouds etc but nice as is too. CJ

:-) Good point Carole but I was thinking we would use camera/photography techniques to show distance not just shoot a distant object. Mary Anne's thumb tack shot I thought was an attempt to take our eye from the front tack to the farther tack, that's why I suggested more sharpness on the second tack to make it work better. For the topic I think the blue lines add a layer to almost help with the distance look. We're after on topic shots not good shots:-)hehe

Time for a controversy Rod! This shot of a far off person and stairway say distance to me much more than a shallow depth of field shot which you said was on-topic. I guess this will be another challenge where the individual interpretation of the topic will influence the votes! Nice distance shot Mary Anne and TV's idea about a small crop on the bottom would isolate the person even more! ;-) CJ

Very nicely composed panorama with solitary stroller. I find the band of blue ripples in the foreground distracting. IMHO it's better to crop them out. -tv

Not a distance shot as such but the small subject matter helps it be on topic.............I think:-)
