His Music #2*

Rod commented that he didn't like the squarish crop on my other version, so here's another one (shot from a slightly different angle) that I was considering. I'd like to hear which one people prefer, as I always have a terrible time deciding.

Canon EOS 350D ,Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6
1/250s f/5.0 at 125.0mm iso200 full exif

other sizes: small medium original auto

For me #1 without a doubt, the close crop gives more emphasis to the subject.

I appreciate the opinions expressed here, and I can definitely agree with both points of view. This version does have a grittier feel, and I've even played around with it in b & w to emphasize that mood. However, I also like the warmth of the other shot and the elimination of many details. So, I'm as undecided as ever. I may leave both of them in, but probably not. The challenge is still young.

I also prefer this shot for this topic, and for the same reasons as Rod and Mikey. The other one is terrific in its own right but the emphasis seems more on the instrument than the musician - it would have been perfect for the DOF challenge! I like the sense of place this image portrays and seeing the musician playing while sitting on the floor in this grungy location. This image is more about him and I can see the look of concentration seeing more of him here. CJ

I'll chime in, ... I prefer this one. The other shot is interesting, and very cool, but I think this one is more on-topic in that the focus is on both the face/person and what he is doing. Whereas, the other puts more focus on the instrument, and the face is almost unrecognizable. Just my $0.02. Cheers, -mikey

Swapping back & forth between the two picys I think it's clearer to me now. The other shot is more of a pretty shot, the type of shot we might take when this player has sold millions of records. This shot shows more of a struggling musician. Anyhow it doesn't really matter wot we think as Mary Anne will know in her heart which is best, as we should look at picys with our hearts not our heads.

I too prefer your first post. Rod seems to be a lone voice. PeteH

Well you will be just as confused now Mary Anne as I much prefer this shot:-) The other one was more about the guitar, this one is more about a young musician & his surroundings. I also like seeing where the light is coming from which helps to give the overall shot some feel which I thought was lacking in the other shot. This shot has more grit now with no emphasis on the sparkling golden tuning pegs.

This version doesn't seem to have the focus that the other shot has. While this one is nice, I think the first version has a lot more impact. Your initial instincts were right on this one, Mary Anne! ~Sharon

I prefer close cropping of the other "His Music".
