The one in pending looks a lot better to me Barry, even the skin tones look better.

Thanks for your comments Daniel and Sharon!

Dear all: I posted a version of this photo without the saturation effect in the pending gallery (slightly different crop as well). I would appreciate your opinion as to which version you like better.

Good portrait, Barry! I don't mind the partial desat at all, it is quite effective. Although, I think it might work just a bit better if his left coat collar was as dark as his right collar. As it is now the left collar tends to draw the eye away from his face. ~Sharon

I do like this portrait a lot (*though I’d like to see just a tad more of his left eye and do not care too much for partial desaturation). Very nice, Barry! — db.

:-) No, for the sake of our jobs the boss's picy stays:-)

Don't worry Rod! This pic predates the scolding you gave me in the previous challenge about using filters. :-) Am I going to make me put this one on the barbie as well? ;-)

WOT!!!!! A filter.........Unbebloodybelievable..... Do I have to start lecturing again Barry:-) If you want the old look do a B&W & when I'm not looking use the sepia filter:-)hehe

I like the effect, gives the impression of time gone by. Perhaps a bit much red on the collar.
Good face! Good job!

Abstract - I don't think I knew how to do layers in Jan when I took this pic. :( Don't tell Rob but this was a filter in Photoshop Elements called "center color" I think. As you guessed I really didn't think the background added anything to the portrait so I liked it that the filter desaturated it. Phil (the subject) has had the hat and coat for many years so they have undergone some natural desaturation on their own. ;-) I don't really know exactly why I like this effect so much other than to say it creates a mood I enjoy. By the way, its OK if you dislike it. My wife doesn't like it, my daugher doesn't like, hell, even Phil picked the unprocessed version when I offered him a choice. :) Cheers!

Interesting look, could be a character in a "James Bond" movie! - Henry

i guess, you used partial-desaturation so that red coat (and may be background too) does not distract viewer from the subject's face. did you try just reducing saturation (not completely) only on coat and background through layers?
i like the expression, so do not want to 'dislike' the shot because of partial desaturation :) -Abstract

Thanks Rod, I think. ;-) I don't think he'll sack me unless someone tells him I put his pic on the world wide web! :)
Rod 29-Mar-2007 11:07
Be careful Barry he has that I want to sack you look:-)
I won't comment on wot is normally an awful partial desat, as the way you have done it, it almost works:-)
Well done mate.
