Well obviously there's an external light source in this shot Rod.... :)

I think perfect for the challenge with the dark and the white contrast, and you got those hairs so very well. And the color on the face... terrific! Love the ripples also. I love it. jano

This is a beautiful capture Bruce. I have to say I can't help but wish the Egret were a little less bright for the topic- just a little bit.

Beautiful Egret shot Bruce! The water certainly is dark and I like the ripples, although as far as the topic goes - I'm not sure. Terrific picture anyway, and I'd love to be able to say this was one of mine! I hope you print this one out. :-) CJ

If the sun has set Jammy then this Egret is radio active mate:-)

Well I have a different take from Rod, I think this perfectly conforms to the spirit and letter of the challenge.
I get a sun has set almost night feel to this shot and I think the 'black' water is a perfect counterpoint to the brilliant white of the egret.

Great shot Bruce, super sharp :).

The well lit bird being so large in the frame detracts from the darkness feel of the shot. We can, like detectives search around for clues in the picys knowing the topic & see dark water & say, ah darkness. I think if we're trying to make a point (the topic) it should be the first feeling we pick up on first viewing.
Bleeding nice shot but:-)
