Lower Surry Church Graveyard*

This is part of the graveyard that surrounds the Lower Surry Church near Bacon's Castle in Surry, VA. The church was built in 1639 but was burned down by Negroes in 1868 during Reconstruction so the whites couldn't reclaim the property that they used to bury their friends and families.

Thanks, Rod! I actually went out there to take a picture of the church. In 2003 Hurrican Isabel put a huge tree through it and it was REALLY dilapidated. However, they have started restoration and it wasn't nearly as cool as before. Here's a link to the history if anyone's interested:http://www.kimshockey.com/va/southwark.html

Nicely shot Cindy the busy composition works well. I can't believe the Negroes burnt this place down, especially after the nice white farmers gave them jobs in the cotton fields:-)
Still we got some great music out of it. Son House, you da man.
