I don't know how to explain it but the closest I can get is it looks similar to a shot that has been through a noise reduction program that has smoothed everything out too much.
It could just be that it's just a great shot:-)

Rod...whats not real?
Processing...no crop, darkened the bg and hair a bit and lightened the face a bit.
Light source - window
Setup...dark upholstered recliner and the subject is wearing a dark jacket and leaning forward a bit to catch the light.
