A CP will also saturate colors and makes the greens/trees really nice.

Thanks very much for your comments all. I felt lucky to capture some nice sky during my short Grand Canyon visit. I arrived before sunset one day and was disappointed with the heavy cloud cover and smoke from controlled burns in the area. I got up for the sunrise the next day and found the same conditions. Finally in late morning things started to open up and I managed to capture this before having to head home. If I ever make in back to the Canyon I’ll be sure and bring a circular polarizer, as I think it would help with clouds- possibly make them more defined when they are dense and grey?

Spectacular image Brent! The clouds really make the image pop and add a lot to the look of the picture as they cast their shadows onto the rocks below. Oh, nice trees too;-) CJ

Aaammm you can't improve on nature, polarisers can make the clouds jump out of the sky, it's a nice effect sometimes but it dominates the shot. I think the effect works better on B&W shots.

Addicted to CP? What a bloody L thought is that. Had a couple of CPs (66 & 67 mm's) for two years now and I only used one once, when I was shooting a water sport to cut down on reflection.

Brent, if you are going to shoot such (beautiful) scenes then I recommend a CP, it will make the sky (at the right angle) more beautiful. Try it.

Awesome sky and colors, quite "grand" Yvonne

:-) Sorry Rod, I went back to my answer and saw a typo that could be confusing- so I corrected it and re-posted. Ah yes, thanks for explaining CP- I was on the right track with my guess. That is precisely what I wish I could have used here, and still plan to get one someday (but will try not to get addicted if I do).
Rod 06-Oct-2006 22:02
Bleeding L it's back again but on top of me answer. Wot you doing Brent:-)
Rod 06-Oct-2006 22:01
Bugger, Brent deleted his question that I tried to answer:-)

Thanks much Aam, I'm not sure what a "CP" is, so I probably didn't use it :-) Is it some kind of chromatic treatment or filter? I just shot it RAW with a good UV filter. I was wishing I owned a polarizing filter, as It would have been interesting to see how it effected the haze that was heavy at times.
Rod 06-Oct-2006 21:59
CP is a circular polariser Brent for digital use the ones for film were sort of straight lines. This shot has that polarised look. I don't know if it would do anything for the haze though as it mainly just gets rid of scattered light reflections so saturating the colours more depending on the angle you use it in relation to the sun. A big danger wiv polarisers is the brain gets addicted to the saturated colours & all your shots can end up wiv the same saturated look, plus you lose a couple of F stops. Used carefully it can be a useful tool:-)

Awesome indeed. Love that sky. Did you use a CP here Brent.

Awesome scenery, Brent. I'm sure you're enjoying yourself there.

Thanks Rod, Paul, and Sue Anne. I hadn't been to the Grand Canyon for about 15 years and it was nice to see it again even if it was for less than a full day. Those are indeed real trees there with nice thick trunks I wish I could have shown, but getting back far enough to view all three put them a little below the canyon rim from me. A big ladder would have come in handy, but I couldn't find one in my pack ;-)

Beautiful view that I'm not even looking at the trees. ;)
Paul 06-Oct-2006 10:47
I love this one, i don't give a stuff about the trees, the sky does it for me:>) Excellent.
Rod 06-Oct-2006 07:05
Looks like two trees & a bush to me:-) Another nice sky looks good mate:-)
