Wow! Fantastic tips. I will give those programs a whirl and see how it goes. BTW - Rod you are probably right about RAW I get the feeling that I am wasting time without gaining too much in return for the added effort in processing. I think it is time to go back to jpg.

I think that under exposing like you say Neo gives you the noise problems. I've always done the opposite & exposed more for the highlights as the eye always accepts very dark shadows. Shooting Raw is fine but remember that unlike some other camera makes Canons Jpeg is as good as the Raw file so as far as quality goes & in a straight conversion there's no perceivable gains.
But if you really want to squeeze a tad more out of your shots then carry on the way you are & deal with the noise. I found that for noisy high Iso shots from me G2 I used the free Neat Image program & it worked a treat if not overdone. They have profiles for all sorts of camera modals that you download & use so it takes all the guess work out of the equation.

Here's the Neat Image link just go to downloads & don't forget to download the G6 profile as well.

Btw, I don't see much noise in the photo.

Hi Neo. I don't have extensive experience with noise reduction but I'm currently using DPP 2.0 (the one that comes with Canon) and it does a decent job at n/r. Notice however that the n/r feature came with version 2.0 only, so you might have to update your DPP. There is also a free software called Noiseware Community Edition, however it limits the output to 400k (or there about).

I would love some advice on noise reduction. I have PS 7.0, but I mostly use PS Elements 4.0. I have played around with demo versions of noise ninja, but I haven't purchased NR software for two reasons: One, because I am not sure which NR software is the best, and two maybe all I need to do is get better at using the NR features that comes with Elements. Another question I have is if part of my noise problem is due to improper settings. I mostly shoot at iso 50 or 100, but I also tend to underexpose and then adjust levels to bring out the details (and unfortunately the noise). I like the added range I get from shooting in RAW and then doing my own processing, but fighting with the noise myself (rather than in camera processing with jpg) is the biggest drawback I find.

Well Rod, as they say, somebody's rubbish is another person's art (or something like that). I'll take me high horse and defer discussing the sigs & frames to the main thread, someday. Not nice to argue under somebody's entry.

Neo, give us some clue about the software you use so we might be able to help in noise reduction.

Aammm look at Neo's smiley after his sentence mate before getting on yer high horse. While we're on the subject you say "We are here to share and enjoy a common artistic medium" If you think frames & sigs have the remotest link to art then you should bugger off to the Cslr challenge where you will find such fellow artiiiiists. We're only interested here in the photographic abilities of posters not the rubbish people dress shots up in.
We will take the clouds as your focal point Neo & say very nicely shot mate:-) Well done.

Neo, you want to tell me that you are intimidated by Rod? Come on! Let him think what bloody thoughts he may have, that's his problem not ours. We are here to share and enjoy a common artistic medium, so let your imagination and creativity run wild. Please post the version that YOU liked, not somebody else's. Please!

Thanks aam! Since this challenge was being hosted by Rod I was toying with the idea of a frame with my name signed on the bottom, but I think for now I'll just list my name like everyone else ;-)

I agree with you about the sharpening, but I am having trouble balancing the sharpening and the noise reduction. I will play with it some and if I can make it better I will repost in a few days.

What an ominous scene well captured. Excellent job there nameless person.

Would be even better with a little sharpening if you ask me. Still excellent nonetheless.
