There's no creativity or skill in doing this Yvonne, you just use a Photoshop action called "bugger up me shot":-)

Jano, You are learning alot about post-processing.I would have no idea how to do this. I think it is opening up some fun, creative exploration. My favorite piece of this shot is the sharp, awesome pennies and the way you addressed the topic. Very creative. Yvonne (plus, look it stimulated communication)

How could an ahrtiiiiiist like this rubbish:-)
janewigginsphotography20-Apr-2006 23:49
Rod - so you don't like it? hehe jano

I don't agree with your all or nothing approach to processing Oved. There's a fine line between pleasure & pain & it's all in degrees as in PP. This shot is all pain:-)
ctfchallenge19-Apr-2006 16:27
Rod, any of those operations can change the picture to be _very_ different than the original :-) My point is that either pp is "allowed" or it is not. There is no way to measure the amount of alteration, or the exact point when a photograph stops being a photograph and starts to be a "graphic image"... But hey, let's take that to the challenge thread (:-) /Oved
Rod 19-Apr-2006 09:23
Doing the things you mention Oved are normally done to improve what you saw in the viewfinder, so you still end up with a photograph not a graphic as Jano has here:-) Gawd it's yuck:-)

Nice treatment, these pennies look really precious
David18-Apr-2006 15:27
Gonna go against popular opinion here - personally I think the PP works very well on this image and I like it very much. Whether that PP then makes the resultant image a photograph or a piece of graphic art doesn't really matter to me to be honest. If I like the end result then how the photographer or artist (call them what you will) got there is immaterial.

David.

I think I would prefer it without the texturing that was done. Just my two cents worth. Muahaha
ctfchallenge18-Apr-2006 13:41
Why would altering a photograph levels, curves, applying USM, converting to B/W etc. be allowed than? -:) A photo should be as it was captured in the camera, don't you think so, Rod :-) ? \Oved

Of course the good shots come when we start to break the rules. But running a PS action over a picy is not breaking the rules but it’s just bringing photography down to the lowest common denominator.
But as far as Graphic designers communicating a message, you're correct Jano a selling message. We're not selling anything here, just trying to be a bit creative with our cameras not Photoshop.
And another thing............................don't argue wiv me, it's Paul that knows nothing:-)

I sort of agree with purist Rod, for a 'photography' forum Photoshop should only be used to adjust the picture to best mirror reality not to create a new reality - but it's a great picture and the fact that the coins (main subject) are not photoshopped is crucial... anyway, Art ceases to be Art when it has to adhere to a set of rules.

"Graphic design is a form of visual communication, the act of selecting, creating and arranging marks on a surface to communicate a message. These marks may be letterforms (Typography) or of other media such as illustration or photography." jano

All your sentiments should be achieved through your viewfinder Jano & just reinforced in PP. Using these effects normally mean the sentiments are trying to be created in PP, rarely happens. If I look at a shot & the first thing that strikes me is the PP then I’m not looking at a photo I’m looking at graphic art which belongs in a graphic arts forum. A photographer that plays with their shots like this should do it in a darkened room with the door locked so no one will ever know:-) Plus the damage it will do to your eyesight:-)

I didn't think you would like it Rod, or others for that matter. Not sure if the tips of the fingers are important as the focal point is on the coins. Not sure why I headed in the direction I did as far as pp, other than sometimes when you give your two cents worth the person behind the idea fades away or become disjointed from the idea itself. Possibly my unconscious reflection.... jano
Rod 17-Apr-2006 06:56
The whole thing should be cropped so there are only the pennies left. I wonder if Jano is getting into scrap booking. I know she gave up line dancing:-)
ctfchallenge17-Apr-2006 05:53
Like this picture and the processing...why crop the tips of fingers?
Rod 17-Apr-2006 04:35
Yuck:-)

Great idea! I like the overall composition but not sure about the added PS effect. I would imagin this image would look classic with some grain instead and maybe in sephia.
