I just watched a documentary on TV last night about Hagia Sofia and the centuries of architectural history dating back to the time of the Romans still existing beneath Istanbul--in some cases as many as 30-40 feet below present ground level.There are huge cisterns 30 or more feet high that you could walk through and the remains of a huge amphitheater and a beautiful palace all down there. What an amazing place! Was this a vacation for you, or did you live there?
