RK, your creativity is well rewarded in this shot, especially, knowing how difficult this is to reproduce, and not much scope for many attempts, without fill the room with smoke. Well done! -Cat

Very nice shot. Beautifully lit and handled.
I have some galleries of smoke you might like to visit www.pbase.com/rokkstar

Cheers

Thanks Britt,Pedro and Techo.
Techo, I did not use any backdrop for this shot. Set this up in the middle of the room (basement), used the macro lens to get close to the smoke. Alien Bees 400 strobe was used, triggered by wired remote.

:-) I know Techo I'm just messing:-)

LOL Rod :)

Well as much as I've experienced with black backdrops and continuous lighting, if the background is not far away enough you get light spill, or you need a good fabric which reflects back as little light as possible, any black amaterial won't do, something like black velvet works good though. But PS helps fix those minor details. Another way to get the black bk, work in a nearly darkened room with lots of room to spare behind the subject.

So I was asking about the background setup details since there is more than one method to get black backgrounds.

Geez this is hard work, Techo, RK used a Jet black backdrop which has a tendency to give off Jet black invisibility. It's really lucky the flash illuminated the smoke cos there would be nothing to look at otherwise.
You just sit back & relax RK, I will fend off all the silly questions. Can't wait to see wot Paul will ask.

Excellent, nice lighting.

I can see it, nice curves! great job with the lighting! what kind of strobe light was used for this shot? Only one last question please, what method did you use to get the jet black background?

Thanks,

Techo :)

Thanks, RK, already thought about flash, but since it was not indicated in the EXIF, I was not sure :) ~Armin

Thanks Abs. - RK

Thanks Armin and Rod.
Rod, you crack me up... yes a light source was used. (wish the smoke was self-illuminating).
Used a remote flash (with softbox) placed to the left of the smoke triggered by a wired remote.

arminb11-Nov-2005 13:49
Hm, now that you say it...could be true?
;-)
Rod 11-Nov-2005 12:29
From me extensive knowledge of photography I would say RK used a light source. Any more questions Armin?:-)
arminb11-Nov-2005 12:07
BTW...brilliant shot! ~Armin
arminb11-Nov-2005 12:03
RK, another question: how did you lit it? ~Armin
Rod 11-Nov-2005 11:56
Then it's back to tremendous. Great work mate.
Photogenix11-Nov-2005 11:51
Thanks Rod and anonymous. This is just smoke from incense. Blocked the smoke on top with hand to give it some volume and shape.

Rod 11-Nov-2005 11:07
Now it looks like painting with light trails, still good though.
Rod 11-Nov-2005 11:05
Do you smoke RK? This is tremendous if it's just smoke.
ctfchallenge11-Nov-2005 06:57
wow, what is this? I cant seem to figure out how this shot was taken.
