Well, Im back at the trusty desktop now and this image realy pops. I have to say ive been restrained about commenting on b&w images bc of the low quality laptops ive been using. Actually it would be tempting to say that i had remembered an earlier comment, but i hadn't. I associate iso with attention to detail and something as significant as a patterned shrt in a b&w image is the sort of thing i mean by that. This image is so much better for the better monitor and I have to agree once again with your choice ISO.

I knew you would consider the shirt Iso, .....I did.................but I didn't think Andy would have. He's a bit like Paul:-)

....because he remembered my comments about shirt choice on my ch83 entry *The Waiting Room*

Andy, I did consider shirt choice. If this didn't have the textures and patterns the whole image would be too smooth. It needs those patterns to help draw you in to the corner. In mono, a plain shirt could end up looking too close to his skintones. Check pending for the original colour (and unprocessed but resized) version. The lighting mood is lost more in colour (I think) Also check a colour picture in the same clothes which *is* better in colour just by light and composition.

Andy, how do you know Iso would have considered the shirt?
ctfchallenge22-Aug-2005 12:14
A masterclass in lighting technique. Im going to make the same comment Ive done to my own images, which is that this still doesnt cry out for a b&w treatment, and maybe the patterned shirt is the reason. A plain black or white shirt would perhaps be more effective. I know that you would have considered this in setting up this shot and am interested in your choice.

Be careful Humberto, I bet Iso would have got the same looking shot with the kit lens at this size. The quality of this shot has more to do with Iso then the lenses he uses.

Great shot as usual. Why is this not in games and hobbies? theFly

At 100% crops you'd spot the difference easily. You just couldn't compare these two lenses. Anyway, no denoising here. Shouldn't have to at iso200. I just shoot RAW and use C1. If you've got any other questions to help you spend your money ;) pop them in the challenge thread :)

Hmmm, but there's something there I that I can't seem quite to pinpoint, an almost absence of... noise? Do you run your images thru de-noise software? Is it the lighthing or the lens? I would venture to say that Mic doesn't have the same silky quality, but then again I *know* now that they aren't taken by the same lens. It would be nice to have a blind test to see if we can identify which images were taken using the L glass...

Well if telling you that it is at F8.0, 1/250@iso200 is going to make you buy L glass then you are an easily led man ;) Two strobes - 1 overhead through grid, 1 to camera left with 60cm softbox. Yes this glass is nice but compare it withhttp://www.pbase.com/ctfchallenge/image/47883149 in exhibition. This is nearly the same light set up but taken with the Sigma 15-30 which is as soft as jelly. Buy a cheaper 50mm F1.4 and you'll never look back.

Hi Iso,

Would you kindly share with us your EXIF for this image? I just showed it to my wife, praising the silky quality of the L glass (I think it is because of the glass, please correct me if I'm wrong). And of course she said something along the lines of: "but you take great pictures too". I guess she was fending the subliminal message :o))
