100% respect Rod. This is real cool. I think it would be a better shot taken inside your house on a sofa or something like that ;) And all from a man with only 4 toes on each foot.

ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!!!!!!!!Rod, know how you get "burned up" over things, but this is ridiculous!! Is this what they mean by being "burned out?" Soooooo funny! Shu

Thanks Paul your name rings a bell, have we met?
Thanks Mark especially for the creative remark as I think most here just think I'm daft:-) I think the burn on the paper might have been 3 or 4 sec. I tried lighting the paper at the start of the 10sec self timer with results like the shot below.

Love it Rod and like Pedro said the reflections of the flames in your glasses is excellent. You really aught to give up the smokes mate, stunts your growth and makes you forget what you are saying...or is that Qld.? :>)
Markjay 15-Jul-2005 04:13
I hope you don't take this the wrong way, Rod but.... when I look at that smirk on your face and your conservative appearance (in general) I would NEVER have pegged you for such a creative chap. I for one appreciate having you here in our challenges..... challenging us to be more creative :-) Great shot, how many seconds would you estimate the newspaper was on fire near your.... lap? Markjay

LOL!!! I like both pics... excellent the reflections on your glasses! Very funny.

Rod, you sure are a brave soul. The reflections of the flames in the spectacles... just awesome!

Well done Rod! and what everybody already have said!

When I first saw those legs beneath the newspaper, I was afraid there wouldn't be any clothes behind it. Now, THAT would have been interesting to try with a burning paper! I can just imagine you trying to explain the situation to the fire department. LOL. In any event, it's a great shot...I don't know how you keep coming up with these ideas.

Rod, thanks for giving me a photo idea with your "reading manual" part of the comment. -Abstract

Thanks again all:-) Mereana has just got a part time job in a fabric shop for 3hours, 2 or 3 times a week & she was at work when I took this shot. The only evidence was a black scorch mark on the pavers:-) I think we only have a 10sec option on the 350D for the self timer, maybe I should read the manual:-) After 35 years I think Mereana is finally adjusting to living with me:-)

i dont think other posters have left anything for me to add here. btw, i love building, especially houses, with exposed brick-work. -Abstract

Rod, Do not show this to your insurance adjuster LOL -Cat

Incredible how one can sit so calmly with a burning paper. I LMAO at the fire on the floor shot. Couldn't that timer be set to go off sooner? What was M's take on this whole scenarion? LOL! As for the table, yes, it supports the scene, and yes the white is distracting. You could always change it to beige. :) Great job! ~ Lonnit

Rod,
LOL - anyone this crazy deserves my vote. Besides, I like your expression, and the reflection of the fire from your glasses. And on top of all this, it is a pretty good photo to boot. I'd keep the white table - if for no other reason than to show you accomplished this with only a few shots that didn't leave smoke and soot all over the room.

The news got too hot to handle .... LOL -Cat
Rod 11-Jul-2005 05:33
Thanks all:-) Yes I wanted the table in so it looked a more natural setting. Maybe the main problem with it is it's white & we all know what white does to some shots don't we:-) The biggest problem getting this shot was timing the burn of the paper to the 10sec self timer as in this shot below:-)
Guest 11-Jul-2005 03:49
Rod, I love this one (table and all) - here you are, having a normal quiet morning on your normal quiet patio, reading what looks like a regular paper, when suddenly the story of the day just decides to really become too hot to handle.... And yet, you keep reading, like this is something normal that happens every day in Oz... (Well, maybe in that other Oz it does :-)
ctfchallenge11-Jul-2005 03:17
Good one Rod!! I partly agree with previous comments. The table lends itself to set the location and to create an ambiance, by working as a prop. Removing it has pros and cons... although it will "clean" the picture, but will loose the casual atmosphere. Just wanted to look at it from a different angle... -Cat

Rod, This is a very curious photo indeed. I am curious how you can look so very calm (in shorts !!!) with flames blazing away. I agree the white table would be best cropped out but over-all I think this is yet another clever shot. Yvonne

FANTASTIC. The colors are awesome, VERY CREATIVE. The brick floor and the wall add to the picture. The reflections on your ( assuming its you) glasses make it real. Now for the (*), the table on right is distracting. Great job.
