... and there was light ... *

The beer in the glass is Belgian and it is called Maredsous, triple malt, 10% alcohol content. Yes, it is not appropriate to put a beer in a red wine glass, but with a beer like this ...

Pfehlauer, this is how. In PS select with Magic Wand tool just one such pixel with tolerance 0 and Contigiouis and Anti-aliased unchecked. This will select all such pixels. Then count'em.

Silly question, Alex... but how did you count washed out pixels? Oh, and the shot is great.
Rod 02-May-2005 19:37
You can see detail in the sun Alexeig just moments before going blind. It's only when we make the switch from dark to light, light to dark etc that we notice our brain trying to expose. So whatever your eye is focused on will expose quite well:-)

triple malt 10% beer...aaaahhh aaahhhh drooling drooling..."Thou shall not use alcoholic ways to attract votes!" :) nice shot alexeig. -Abstract

Hmmm Rod ... Just have a look at the sun and tell yourself that you do not see blown highlights ... Tell yourself that you are seeing detail there ... LOL

This is a bit extreme but the same happens with sun reflections from highly reflective surfaces like metal, glass and such. OK. enough of highlights. After all they a a pretty minor issue and yes, they MUST be blown if strong reflection is a part of your subject
Rod 02-May-2005 10:53
Alexeig, the human eye does not see blown highlights. Your eyes will focus on one thing & expose accordingly. The range of the human eye is not great therefore the eye & brain combine to give you a good compromise. Don't let the brain (or sensor) fool you into showing what we don't see.

Here is another cut. The previous one is located at

Which is better?

Many thanks for comments. Paul, I appreciate if this transmit mood, I was looking for this effect. Andy: in fact I was thinking to make a central composition here, I shall try. Rod; here I disagree. The highlights were blown also for the human eye, you can not expect more from the silicon, not yet. And, besides, there are exactly 29 pixels here which show (255,255,255) and none on the sky, all on glass.

I have to say i really like this simple idea. The condensation on the glass, the foam suggesting a few mouthfuls have been enjoyed and the cloud and sky suggesting a very pleasant day gives me a relaxed and very refreshed feeling. The image evokes a mood and that means more to me than being a 'perfect' photo.
Rod 01-May-2005 01:10
It's the blown highlights in the clouds & glass, it makes the shot too hard looking. You would have been better off exposing on the clouds & then some judicial use of the shadow & highlights filter on the glass only. The Kit lens can take shots like this if exposed within the limits of digital sensors. One must learn to see as the sensors see's when taking the shots. Good idea Alexeig & an enjoyable shoot I bet:-)

The slight angle that the glass is at does not work for me. Go for extreme or straight and central.

I wouldn't say on focus, but I do think the kit lens does show even in images of this size. I found this when I uprezed some images. The ones taken with the Tamron or the Sigma uprezed with no problems, but the kit lens showed artifacts. It may in fact be your window what is doing that effect on the sky, but check out Rod's image with the water bottle and see that sky. That at least shows that the G2 has a great lens, lol! So I guess the kit lens can make some good images, but it does have it limits. About L glass... well I only dream about it (and not too much ;o) )
alexeig30-Apr-2005 19:57
Many thanks for comment, Nugar. Yes, I should clean my window glass, this should eliminate the specks. As for the kit lens, I doubt that at this size and with this light the L glass would make any difference. The sky is clearly out of focus. Do you mean that you would prefer to have the sky in focus too?
Nugar30-Apr-2005 19:41
Hi Alex,

I like your compo here. Maybe it would help to crop the left side a bit so the glass moves more into the lower left third area. Also, there are minute specks that would benefit from a cloning job. I have to confess that the sky doesn't work for me. But it is not your fault, but the kit lens', I think.
