This box is crafted from a myrtle burl. Inside, there are a number of puzzle shaped pieces which fit into each other, and inside each other to form the compartments of the box. The box was handmade in San Francisco and given to me as a gift a few years back.
Beautiful box, light and sequence... the only thing that would make it better is to be a little larger. But what's that expression? Always leave them wanting more. Well done.
Thanks for your comments. This box is one of my special treasures and I'm glad I finally got around to photographing it. It really is a work of art...it's constructed from one solid piece of wood, with all the little inserts painstakingly carved out to fit inside.
Photonut, a burl is a large knot on the side of a tree....they are a "scar" that grows when the tree has been damaged. Because the grain in them isn't uniform like the trunk of a tree, they are really popular for sculptures and handcrafted items like this.
