Thanks Garrett. Paul D.

I prefer the natural color version, but this works, too. Whatever you do, do not enter all three versions. That would dilute the votes. --Garrett

The partial desaturation technique seems to work really well here. There is nothing too unnatural or obvious about it, the sand might really be grey for all I can tell. With some partial images it really stands out as manipulated, but I don't feel that here.

Thanks - I'll try that and let you know!

Why the all or nothing approach? I like the original entry. I think the all color one loses the focus of the sign. I think the all BW one loses impact. If it were mine, I'd leave the sign yellow and heavily desaturate the sand, but not 100%. ~ Lonnit

Great shot. IMHO I like the colour version better as the yellow of the sign is the essential ingredient to me. -alexoki

OK Rod, just for you (and I admit I kinda like it) with minimal time spent in channel mixer (first attempt). Still kinda like partial one too tho!:

Thanks Rod, i'll give that a try later and post something. My wife prefers the version with colour sand so I'm tempted to post both or even 3 and let voters decide!!!!

That's OK Paul having the photo in the text saves us some work:-) I like the sand better in B&W so could you post a completely B&W shot so we can see what works best.

Not sure why my link won't be a link and includes photo - can anyone help with that!?!

Thanks for the feedback all, it is very encouraging to have some even mildly good feedback after such intermittent participation in the challenges and indeed in photography! I did wonder about desaturation but I really wanted to make the sign stick out, I certainly don't find desaturation gimmicky but perhaps it isn't to your tastes, I think if a shot could use it then why not. See what you think here:

Another favourite of mine. Again the simplicity makes the shot. I too wonder what this would be like without the desaturated effect.
Rod 08-Jan-2005 18:36
I really like the way you captured the footprints they have a great receding effect. Doesn't this work in B&W or colour as the partial desaturation effect seems a bit gimmicky. Nice shot Paul
