Stone Henge #5237

South England

I really didn't want to post this photo as so many people think it's an Ansel Adams shot. It took a lot of work to get the three tones all in one shot.

Nutcase, I actually don't know what such blown highlight might be. I just observed that by writing silly comments to other people's photos I get similar response to my ones. And that's what I'm after :). Tomas

Rules are for followers Mary Anne, we're leaders:-) Hehe, just keep posting until the voters are happy.

My favorite of the ???? number of Stonehenge shots you've posted here. Isn't there some sort of a rule about these multiple submissions? ;-)

I knew the very mention of Ansels name would strike fear into your hearts. Because of your excellent critique Nutcase you are now promoted to Nutter status............Arise Nutter. By the way Nutter, this shot wasn't taken just after Stone Henge was constructed, as you can see by the boulders on the floor this shot was taken during construction:-)

AAAAAAAAAAAAhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.... what a relief. We're back to that Star-Trekian feel I liked so much! :) Now I'm comfy. ~ Lonnit

Dorys:
RE: No Tourists in Photo
I think the reason is, these shots were taken shortly after Stonehenge was erected, it wasn’t a tourist attraction at that time.

But being serious now, I really like this one Uncle Rod, #5237, very artistic, nice composition. The cloud cover makes the shot more mysterious.

Blown highlights are ok on B&W shots, however I don’t see any on this one.

I think Rod shot a movie with his Super-8 or whatever back in 73 in Stonehenge. Now he's going to rotate here every single frame of the film. I have to admit that I quite like this one. Particularly that Rod's typical blown highlight 'round the top right-hand corner of the main stone. Tomas

Lonnit, find fault with this gem of a shot if you can!! Remember to fault this shot is to fault Ansel Adams...............& me:-)

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Blah! What are you doing man? I told you I LIKE the styrofoam shots! Why'd you put this NORMAL one up? Don't like it I'm telling you! BTW, Is that grass real or is it plastic? 'Cuz, you know, it really looks more like paper. And why are those rocky thingies all squeezed up into the top half of the shot? Are we supposed to care about the dandelions? Move that horizon down - to like the bottom of the trash can - and put those really cool ones back up! Oooooo, am I dishing Uncle Roddy style yet? This is fun!!! BTW, Uncle Roddy, I think you're corrupting the dignified manner we used to have here. THANKS!!!!!! ;) ~ Lonnit, all too caught up in the inanity!

Dorys is correct for once Shu, although I didn't realise that being a Gnu had the attractions that Dorys described:-) Maybe I'm having this problem because my shots look so beautiful that they don't look real, I think Ansel had the same problem:-)
Guest 16-Nov-2004 23:02
btw, lovely shot rod. if it weren't because there aren't 1000s of tourist in the scene you'd have me completely fooled!
Guest 16-Nov-2004 22:59
shu- i think he meant gnu: either of two large African antelopes (Connochaetes gnou and C. taurinus) with a head like that of an ox, short mane, long tail, and horns in both sexes that curve downward and outward. we'd have to ask mrs. rod whether or not this is true. LOL
ctfchallenge16-Nov-2004 13:31
Its "Guru": Real meaning of 'Guru' in Sanskrit, where its adopted from, means teacher and guide in spiritual and philosophical matters. The english has adopted it in a different way though: "A master in the field". -Abstract
PS: GNU is an operating system, which uses Linux kernel.
Rod 16-Nov-2004 11:08
I'm going back to the mini challenges..............where I'm treated like a guru……….or is it gnu?
PhotoNUT 16-Nov-2004 06:59
I like this shot Uncle Rod.

I never thought styrofoam could look so good!
ctfchallenge15-Nov-2004 15:03
What I like about this photo is how the horizontal stones are placed on tops of the vertical ones. Was it natural or did you arrange it yourself, Rod? Tomas
Rod 15-Nov-2004 10:26
Fake look, Styrofoamish, & the final humiliation, Looks like Disney............Has any unframed photo ever suffered the indignities that my stunning almost awesome shots have suffered in any of the posh challenges?...............Well Lonnit!!!:-)
Rod 15-Nov-2004 10:16
Shu, wot do you mean by "were"..........hehe I know what you mean mate, thanks:-)
Rod 15-Nov-2004 10:13
Mary Anne, I'm really surprised at the green mossy covering on the rocks from your shots, I'm sure there was none 30 years ago. It's a shame you couldn't get any closer you would have seen my carving of a big heart with "Rod luvs Mereana" in one of the stones.............Only kidding:-)
Shu15-Nov-2004 03:52
Rod--You were taking great images in "73! Shu
Guest 15-Nov-2004 03:40
Rod, I like all the shots. :) This one is more rocky looking and less styrofoamish, but I really liked the fake look too. This one looks more like Disney rocks than styrofoam. ;) Did you think I didn't like them b/c they looked fake? You'd be wrong if you did. It wasn't a negative comment, it was an "oh cool!" comment. :) I like them all. ~ Lonnit

Rod, in case you want to see how mossy and lichen-covered the rocks have become, here are a few shots taken this past May. Note that the ground is now grassy, which makes it impossible to get the wonderful tonal contrasts you have here. Also, the entire area is roped off, preventing anyone from walking amongst the rocks. I suppose it's a small price to pay for preserving this ancient wonder, but I personally had a hard time feeling the mystery of the place as I viewed it from a distance in a queue with other tourists, all of whom were wearing headphones and carrying portable tape players.

Well, I guess you just have to go back and take some new photos there. After all, it's been 30 years or so. LOL

Now I suppose they look like toffee:-)
ctfchallenge14-Nov-2004 05:56
Oh, I just thought of what I think is making it look fake. Those stones are all covered with moss, right? Or lichen or whatever you call that stuff? Well, being that it's BW one cannot see that it's green life on it and assumes that it is the rock itself, but the texture is not of rock. Therefore, it looks man-made. Am I onto something? Or does it just sound like I'm on something? BTW, I don't drink beer. ;) LOL! ~ Lonnit
ctfchallenge14-Nov-2004 05:53
LOL! This one has defintely got to be styrofoam (however you spell it - but I wouldnt' have a clue b/c apparently my dictionary was printed before styrofoam was invented! LOL!). Ok, you didn't remove the other to put this up did you? I like the other better. But this one would be good if it were real! ;) LOL! ~ Lonnit
