I like the shot but not thrilled iwth the blown hightlight. Idon't care for the framing. The framing is very modern and this instrument doesn't work with modern - it detracts from it. ~ Lonnit

Gday Nugar me ole mate:-) The only thing digital cameras can make us do is to work within their limitations, as every photographer in the past has learnt to work within the limitations of film. Yes the limited dynamic range is problematic but with programs like Photoshop etc I can't see any excuse for blown highlights unless you're deliberately using them as an element in your shots. I'm not proficient in PS so shots I get with blown highlights that I can do nothing with I class as failures & put the extra effort in when shooting. The blown highlight in Pops shot is only minor but could have been easily avoided in the controlled situation he shot it in.

Rod, I wonder about the blown highlights. As you say, they seem to become accepted. But are they? Or it is just because the limited dynamic range seems to force you to blow them?

I agree with all the other comments the painting with light technique you describe gives this shot a feeling for the instrument. The only blemish is the highlight, which is a blown highlight which regrettably it seems is becoming accepted as normal in digital photography. Well done Pops.

I love shooting pictures like this, 30sec exposure. It's lit by a small flashlight powered by a single AA battery. Other than the flashlight the room was almost dark. I don't hold the flashlight still, I paint the light on the subject and move the flashlight around. I'd shoot a picture and look at the on camera preview and decide what I did and did not like about the lighting, make adjustments and shoot again. I keep doing that until I've got a picture I like.

very nice subject, and excellent capture. I love how you used both the positive and negative space in the shot to create a very interesting curved outline. nice lighting as well.

My younger son studied the violin for 12 years. He went off to college and joined the marching band playing symbols! I've got half a dozen very old unplayable violins at home that my mother bought at an estate auction in the 1980s. Oh yes, I have absolutely NO musical talent!

Ah, Nugar. That is exactly what it is called. There is nothing dirty about it! And it's one of the principle reasons that violins sound so wonderful.
