This is beautiful, Neil. More so because I love photographing pelicans, and I am envious that you managed to get them by moonlight.

Neil,
This photo really grabs me. Very nice exposure, great composition. It would make a great poster. I'd also like to see a 8x10 of this before cropping.

Yup, looks better without the marker

Much more serene without the channel marker, Neil. I'm amazed at how well you did it...you must have a steadier hand than I do. :-)

Thanks for the comments. I have pulled the channel marker out and reshot it as suggested - thanks for the suggestion. Louise likes the rock, so I left it there though. aaam - yes it is a real photo, only one frame, not a composite. My aim is to make it as real as the actual scene is. The only 'trick' is that I selectively darkenned the moon to reveal the detail. This is what your eye naturally does when looking at this type of scene. When looking at the moon your eye's iris closes, and opens when looking at the darker part of the scene. I have just copied that by exposing in RAW, then developed two files, one exposed for the general scene, and the other exposed for the moon only, and combined the two in Photoshop. Then a little curves, USM, and filtering for noise in Neat Image (and lastly cloned out the channel marker)

Without knowing, I'd say it is real. The moon's glow in the water would be hard to fake (I think)

I understand other's opinion, but what I would like to know is: is it a real photo or a photoshop enhanced one.

Fantastic. And, you have chosen the right time and have not blown the moon. I am not sure that marker sign is THAT detrimental. I would clone out the stone instead

I totally agree with Mary Anne. Also on the sign issue. Las week, I went to a park to take some photographs and everywhere I tried to shot, there was a misplaced (or badly placed) chair, trash can, hose :o\

I especially like the reflection of the moon behind the pelican. Would you consider cloning out the channel marker sign? (They put them in the most inconvenient places, don't they?)
