Mother Nature's Architecture *

Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii

"The Banyan Tree"

This tree is 131 years old, celebrating it's birthday on April 24th.

A Banyan tree grows out horizontally and from time to time drops a set of roots from the branches. These roots, when they reach the ground become structural and nutritional support for the tree. "The Banyan Tree" currently covers over 2/3 of an acre. This picture is one of those sets of roots.

In the background on the left you can see the central trunk of the tree. On the right is another set of roots extending to the ground.

Mrs. Pops father saw this tree in 1941 when he was in the Navy and for years raved about it. It was just a mere 67 years old at the time!

I think I have seen that tree also. Is that in the little park off the main strip in Lahaina? theFly
